There are many ways students can demonstrate they There are many ways students can demonstrate they understand vocabulary words. Try playing a modified game of charades where students can choose whether they explain the word, act out the word, or draw a picture. This could work with the whole class or smaller groups. This is a great low-prep way to differentiate for the different learning styles found in your classroom.

Have you ever tried a warm up or check-in by givin Have you ever tried a warm up or check-in by giving students an answer and having them come up with a question? You can give them a number or a word. Then the students generate questions that fit the answer. Questions can range from simple addition to complex equations or simple definitions to jokes. Sometimes I give students a minute or two to generate as many questions as they can.

What would be your question to the answer “summer”?

Don’t get me wrong, I still feel like there are Don’t get me wrong, I still feel like there are about a million things to teach when it comes to phonics. Multiple pronunciations, homophones, exceptions… However, I take comfort in knowing about half of all words follow regular spelling patterns, and another 36% have just one tricky sound. Chapter three of Making the Shift built on my understanding of why a systematic phonics program is necessary, and it provided some suggestions of engaging activities that can be easily incorporated.

The second shift focuses on easy ways to integrate The second shift focuses on easy ways to integrate phonemic awareness into your whole group or small group lessons. Even if you don’t have a structured phonics program, you can integrate strategies such as phoneme segmentation and phoneme deletion. There are great suggestions and words lists to help. One of my favorite parts of this chapter is a chart that provides a hierarchy of skills that lead to phonemic awareness proficiency. (Swipe to see the chart.). I love this for individuals and small groups of students who may need a little extra work.

The first shift debunks the myth that reading comprehension begins with print. It challenges you to take a look at what you are doing to deepen students’ understanding of spoken language. There is a list of easy, practical ways for any primary teacher to raise the bar on the expectations for their own spoken language.
